Every little bit helps.
Runoff is the biggest threat to Monona Bay's water quality.
For homeowners, many simple common-sense strategies can reduce
runoff. For
commercial and institutional residents in the watershed, the
challenges are greater.
Hard
surfaces, such as parking lots and streets are an enormous source
of runoff. A one-acre parking lot produces about 16 times as
much runoff as a one-acre meadow. The use of permeable
hard surfaces is one way to address this problem. Rain
gardens and infiltration trenches are another. For example,
the Department of Defense has constructed infiltration trenches
in their massive parking lots at the Pentagon.
Water quality is vital to our recreational
enjoyment of Monona Bay. Improving water quality will take time
and dedication.
